European Mobility Week at ITU

Tue, 08/10/13

ITU marked this year’s European Mobility week by inviting staff to “go green” and stay healthy by changing their travel habits and exploring Geneva by bicycle.

ITU teamed up with Genèveroule and with the kind support of the ITU Administration, the ITU Mobility group organized a bike rental activity aimed at encouraging staff to try cycling to and from work.
The initiative proved so successful that Genèveroule kindly extended the activity beyond European Mobility Week and added on an extra day on Monday 23 September.
Users were delighted to have the opportunity to experiment, one participant fed back to say:
Fantastic. Every week should be mobility week. It was very simple to take the bike. If they were there I’d never take the car, nor even the scooter again during the day.”

Despite the rain on some days, a total of seven electric bicycles (e-bikes) and three conventional cycles were hired out a total of 50 times. 22% of users used the cycles for their commute between home and work, and 78% used them during their lunch breaks. E-bikes proved particularly popular, with all of them being rented out on 4 of the 6 days.
Just wanted to let you know how grateful I am to have had a chance to try the e-bike. It was fantastic!! It really changed my view of how great they are: easy to use, silent, powerful and fun, … and something you can use even in your skirt or work clothes.”

To really convince participants of how much fun can be had cycling around Geneva, a group picnic was organized on the Tuesday lunch-time, taking participants on a fun 1.5 hour round trip, stopping half way for a picnic in one of Geneva’s most beautiful parks.

Following on from this success, the ITU Mobility group hopes to organize another activity in the near future and would like to thank the ITU Administration and the Staff Council for their support.
European Mobility Week takes place annually each September and aims to raise awareness of more sustainable ways to travel, encouraging participants to try another mode that will hopefully introduce them to a greener and healthier way to travel. This year the campaign took place between Monday 16 – Friday 20 September.
