Secretariat goes all a-twitter on WED

Birdie turned heads and caused a range of reactions wherever he went on Wednesday 5 June. People took photos, posed for photos, some just stared. There was no mistaking however, that Birdie was in the house.

Birdie, who is City Hall’s official mascot for GreeNYC, toured the freshly renovated Secretariat Building on World Environment Day as part of the celebrations for the day.

As he toured the Lobby and 10th floor, being shown the embedded environmental features of the building, such as the light harvesting blinds, sensor controlled lighting, and less visibly noticeable but equally important energy and water efficiency systems put in place, he brought at least one meeting to a standstill, twice, to looks of total disbelief, amusement and confusion of the room full of people inside. He went on to startle a couple of unsuspecting elevator passengers, and more bystanders to count.

One of the UN Reporters snapped a picture of Birdie as he was taking a look at the commuter bike storage area, and posted it on twitter. Good thing Birdie is on the record when it comes to green initiatives.

Birdie was in attendance at UNICEF House for the inaugural UN Green Fair, which was hosted by the UNICEF Staff Association Greening Committee to encourage staff to consider more environmentally friendly options in their work and beyond to compliment this year’s World Environment Day theme, ‘Think.Eat.Save Reduce your Foodprint”. The fair was attended by over 400 UNICEF and UN Staff. And one giant bird!
