UNECE staff use creativity to celebrate WED

This year's theme for World Environment Day was 'Go Wild for Life', encouraging us to celebrate species under threat and to take action to help safeguard them for future generations.

According to the motto “Be creative, reuse plastic, avoid waste, and have fun!” UNECE organized an "arts and crafts' workshop on Friday, June 3. UN staff and visitors were invited to find a way to reuse their plastic waste in a creative way.

Plastic bottles became vases, earrings, flowers, and penholders which now adorn offices in the Palais.

In addition to the arts and crafts workshop, the UNECE are running an awareness-raising project using 12 year old Sophia – a doll consisting solely of recycled plastic bottles that had been installed on the Palais des Nations' central terrace. Sophie was sparking curiosity all week in advance of WED.

A representative of UNECE said:

"Sophia’s thoughts and concerns regarding future life on earth raise awareness to the need for environmental protection and remind us to take care of the world we live in. Sophia’s future is the future of all our children. Therefore, our actions today will shape the way they live tomorrow."

You can hear more of Sophia's story on the UNECE's YouTube channel.
