UNIFIL celebrates the International Year of Soil

Staff at the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon went out of their way to celebrate World Environment Day this year. The focus of the day was healthy soil, in recognition of the fact that 2015 is the International Year of Soils.

Two events took place on the day. The first was a symbolic walking parade from the Environmental Management Unit to the transport yard and back again. The second was the promotion of a song about the importance of 'Healthy Soil for Healthy Living', written by Mrs Monita Youssef, the welfare Environment Officer.

The Director of Mission Support told the assembled crowd that 'the well-being of humanity, the environment, and the functioning of the economy ultimately depend on the responsible management of the planet's natural resources'. Mrs Yousef then sang her song, and a tree was planted to symbolise the importance of reforestation.
