UNOG 'Bike to Work' month

Wed, 13/07/11

Once again, staff at the United Nations Office at Geneva (UNOG) participated in the Swiss nationwide “Bike to Work” initiative. The programme, which has existed in Switzerland since 2006, encourages participants to cycle at least part of the route between home and work during the month of June.

Split over 47 registered teams, 175 UNOG staff  braved the adverse weather conditions to participate. This  number of teams is a significant increase from the 39 teams taking part in 2010.

Many of the participants had never cycled to work before, and despite the weather ranging from very hot to very rainy, the experience was positive.

“I cycled the distance of 10 km from my home to the United Nations for the first time for ‘Bike to Work’. I discovered a different way of life and was full of energy after my morning exercise. I will definitely continue through the summer,” one of the participants said.

The participants marked the end of the programme with a joyful breakfast and a group photo. It is hoped that even more UNOG staff will join in 2012.
