Staff engagement

With over 220,000 staff (including peacekeepers) the UN is one of the largest employers in the world. Staff have a critical role to play in enhancing the sustainability of the organization:

  • they can use their influence to ensure that systems and processes become more sustainable;
  • they can change their behaviours so that their environmental footprint is reduced; and
  • they can communicate the values of the UN through their work, every day, both in the office and in the field.

The Greening the Blue campaign was created as the one-stop shop for UN staff and others with an interest in creating a more sustainable UN. The website details UN organizations' emissions and what each one is doing to reduce their footprint. It provides a wealth of tools, publications and other downloadable materials (such as striking screensavers, posters and presentations) to help engage audiences in greening activities. Greening the Blue also presents green news and case studies from around the UN System.

To find out more and to get involved in the Greening the Blue campaign you can sign up to the newsletter, follow us on Twitter, or get in touch via Facebook or LinkedIn. If you are a UN staffer you can register as a Green Champion.
