30 March 2022 UNEP COLLABORATES WITH ROCKEFELLER CENTER® FOR FLAG PROJECT

Each spring, the Rockefeller Center invites the public to submit art to be displayed on one of the 193 flagpoles that surround the Plaza. In 2022, Rockefeller Center collaborated with UNEP and the Climate Museum for this crowd-sourced art exhibition to submit art on environment and climate action Winning designs will be transformed into eco-friendly biodegradable flags that will be raised on the 193 flagpoles at Rockefeller Center.

Biodegradable Flags

These biodegradable flags use CiCLO® technology, which allows microbes in landfills to breakdown synthetic fabrics at an enhanced rate of 4-5 years* compared to 50-60* years using virgin or recycled polyester fabric.

The fibres consist of polyester and an additive which is added and blended during the yarn manufacturing process to make it easier for the microbes to breakdown the polyester. These fibres safely biodegrade, into basic chemical compounds that are non-toxic.

Climate Action Through Public Art

The artworks celebrate the theme for this year’s World Environment Day, “Only One Earth,” and showcases an appreciation for the environment and how to live sustainably and in harmony with nature.

The flagpoles will be flown at Rockefeller Center from April 1st to May 6th to mark Earth Day and on June 5th for a special commemoration of World Environment Day. The collaboration also coincides with Stockholm+50, to recognize global action towards a sustainable society.

“This is a critical year marking important environmental milestones, including UNEP’s 50th anniversary and Stockholm+50, to gather momentum to address the triple planetary crisis of climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution. This collaboration with the Rockefeller Center is a great opportunity to call for urgent actions for a healthy planet for the prosperity of all.”

  • Ligia Noronha, United Nations Assistant Secretary-General and Head of the New York Office.

*Ideal conditions – the landfill has an abundant amount of rain and high temperatures during the day.
