MISSION
The Ozone Secretariat’s mission is to facilitate and support the Parties to the Vienna Convention for the Protection of the Ozone Layer and the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer and other stakeholders as appropriate, in implementing actions to protect and heal the ozone layer against adverse impacts resulting from its modification, thus protecting human health and the environment, including minimizing impacts on climate.
ALIGNMENT WITH THE STRATEGY FOR SUSTAINABILITY MANAGEMENT IN THE UNITED NATIONS SYSTEM, 2020–2030
With the adoption of an Environmental Management System (EMS) in 2022, the Secretariat became one of the first Multilateral Environmental Agreements (MEA) to do so. By applying the EMS, we are making further efforts to green our meetings. All unavoidable emissions as a result of Secretariat activities are fully offset annually and reported.
EMS AND REDUCTION EFFORTS
For the 2022 reporting year, Ozone Secretariat's progress on the EMS is rated as: Meets.
Since the implementation of the Ozone Secretariat’s EMS it has achieved the following:

100% of events will follow EMS planning procedures by 2025: OEWG44 (2022) 65%, MOP34 (2022) 53%

100% of minimum event organisers guidelines achieved for events by 2025: OEWG44 (2022) 81%, MOP34 (2022) 63%

100% of suppliers report on sustainable event guidelines by 2025: 100% (2022)

100% of unavoidable event carbon emissions for 2022 were offset via UN-approved, certified carbon credits
ENVIRONMENTAL & SOCIAL SAFEGUARDS AND STANDARDS IN POLICIES, PROJECTS AND PROGRAMMES
For the 2022 reporting year, Ozone Secretariat’s status of implementing environmental and social safeguards and standards in their policies, projects and programmes is: No, but in progress.
ENVIRONMENTAL TRAINING FOR PERSONNEL
Staff of the Ozone Secretariat are fully informed of the Secretariat’s EMS, its aims and expectations based on awareness raising and training provided by the EMS focal point. For the 2022 reporting year, Ozone Secretariat's status on providing training on environmental sustainability is: Yes, it is mandatory for all personnel.
OFFSETTING
The total emissions calculated for 2022 of 522 tCO2e, as well as carbon emissions calculated by the Secretariat for ALL remaining travel (unfunded) associated to its operations of 430 tCO2e, totalled 952 tCO2e. This was fully offset to achieve carbon neutrality for 2022.

The Secretariat is housed within UNEP head office which is managed by UNON. Reporting is managed by UNON.

OTHER ENVIRONMENTAL MEASURES
The Ozone Secretariat offsets all carbon emissions generated by all of its staff, parties to the Montreal Protocol and experts of the scientific Assessment Panels to the Montreal Protocol in their travel to attend annual meetings.
NEXT STEPS
As part of the adopted EMS, Ozone Secretariat will aim to have 100% of staff undergo EMS training to support its implementation and adoption across the Secretariats meetings.
