Mission

The mission of UNIDO is to promote and accelerate Inclusive and Sustainable Industrial Development (ISID) in Member States. Accordingly, UNIDO’s programmatic focus is structured around four strategic priorities:

  • creating shared prosperity;
  • advancing economic competitiveness;
  • safeguarding the environment; and
  • strengthening knowledge and institutions.

Safeguarding the environment is one of the critical strategic priorities that UNIDO strives to meet through programmes that promote:

  • resource-efficient and low carbon industrial production;
  • clean energy access for productive use;
  • implementing multilateral environmental agreements; and
  • global consultations on circular economy.

ALIGNMENT WITH THE STRATEGY FOR SUSTAINABILITY MANAGEMENT IN THE UNITED NATIONS SYSTEM, 2020–2030

UNIDO believes that environmental and social sustainability is a fundamental aspect of achieving outcomes consistent with its mandate, and recognizes that projects that foster environmental and social sustainability rank among the highest priorities of its activities. Therefore, for its technical cooperation programmes, UNIDO promulgated an Environmental and Social Safeguards Policies and Procedures (ESSPP) to harness the full potential of industry’s contribution to (i) the achievement of sustainable development, and (ii) lasting prosperity for all. Within the first thematic pillar, UNIDO is dedicated to supporting environmentally sound and sustainable development in the full range of its project activities.

In its facilities and internal operations, the proposed UNIDO EMS policy under formulation shall envision internal targets and key performance indicators aligned to the strategy for sustainability in the United Nations System 2020-2030 Phases.

EMISSIONS REDUCTION

UNIDO has been climate neutral over the past 5 years.

EMS AND REDUCTION EFFORTS

Ongoing development of a policy.

Each year, as part of the Greening the Blue Report on Environmental Governance, each participating UN entity’s progress on the development of an Environmental Management System (EMS) is evaluated according to the UN system’s EMS criteria (these criteria are available on the Methodology webpage). Upon this evaluation the entity is then rated Exceeds, Meets, Approaches, or No response. For the 2022 reporting year, UNIDO’s progress on the EMS is rated as: No response.

ENVIRONMENTAL & SOCIAL SAFEGUARDS AND STANDARDS IN POLICIES, PROJECTS AND PROGRAMMES

For the 2022 reporting year, UNIDO’s status of implementing environmental and social safeguards and standards in their policies, projects and programmes is: No response.

ENVIRONMENTAL TRAINING FOR PERSONNEL

No training available on the subject yet (see above re development of a policy).

For the 2022 reporting year, UNIDO’s status on providing training on environmental sustainability is: No response.

ENVIRONMENTAL INVENTORY APPROACH

The inventory reporting covers 4 main clusters of information with the following data:

  • UNIDO HQ purchased electricity; renewable sources, stationary combustion, refrigerants and purchased steam;
  • HQ Waste management; water usage; non-air mobility; non-air business travel and energy efficiency measures;
  • Business travel emissions
  • UNIDO Field office data

OFFSETTING

UNIDO, as one of the champions of the environment, is also committed to achieving the UN-wide goal of climate neutrality and participates actively in reducing its greenhouse gas emissions and to offset those emissions which it cannot eliminate through emission- reduction credits purchased through the Clean Development Mechanism.

NEXT STEPS

The promulgation of the organization’s EMS policy in the areas of facilities management and internal operations is a priority and should draw on the best practices already exhibited by early adopters in the UN system and others.
