16 August 2023 UNDP in Viet Nam's Commitment to Sustainability

UNDP in Viet Nam is taking bold steps to reduce its environmental footprint and support Viet Nam's commitment to net zero emissions. Through its Greening Moonshot initiative, UNDP is implementing various measures to reduce its carbon footprint and make its operations more sustainable.

A central part of this strategy is the introduction of electric vehicles – a car and several motorbikes. These vehicles produce no greenhouse gas emissions and are an important step towards reducing the organization's carbon footprint.

To further encourage the use of electric vehicles, UNDP jointly with other UN agencies has installed charging stations in the shared office premises, accessible to other UN agencies.

The Green One UN House, the shared common premises of the UN in Viet Nam, has also been fitted with solar panels to generate clean energy. This reduces the dependence on fossil fuels and contributes to the overall reduction of carbon emissions.

Waste disposal is another area where UNDP is taking proactive steps to reduce its environmental impact. The collective refectory at the Green One UN House has implemented waste segregation, composting, and recycling measures to minimize waste and promote responsible waste management.

In addition, UNDP and other UN agencies have also started collecting batteries for safe and responsible disposal. Batteries contain hazardous chemicals that can pollute the environment if not disposed of properly. This initiative ensures that batteries are collected and disposed of safely, reducing the risk of environmental contamination.

For several years, UNDP has introduced a non-plastic water bottle policy for meetings and workshops, reducing the use of disposable plastic bottles and promoting the use of reusable ones.

The introduction of electric vehicles, solar panels, waste segregation, and responsible waste management are just some of the measures being implemented by UNDP in Viet Nam. These actions not only help to reduce UNDP's environmental footprint but also set an example for the wider community to follow. By implementing these measures, UNDP hopes to inspire others to take similar actions and contribute to the broader goal of a more sustainable future.

UNDP in Viet Nam is committed to greening the blue and reducing its carbon footprint,” said UNDP Resident Representative Ramla Khalidi. “Through its Greening Moonshot initiative, UNDP would like to make its operations more sustainable and contribute to realizing Viet Nam's commitment to net zero emissions”.
